We may not realise it, but the construction industry is responsible for most of the dust, mounds of rubble and the gradual decline of vegetation in our surroundings. Every road repaired creates mounds of waste and requires a lot of efforts to address- with millions of liters of water and an army of trucks required to cure cement, or clear rubble.
One man aims to change this. With his zero-cement concrete technology.
“Conventional infrastructure consumes enormous quantities of cement, steel, water and virgin aggregates, yet often requires repeated repairs. Existing sustainable solutions largely focused on reducing cement. We asked a more fundamental question: can we eliminate cement and still create a superior material?,” Sourabh Kumar, the founder and CEO of Ecopath, asks.
“Our objective is not to sell a greener compromise. It is to create infrastructure that is stronger, lasts longer and generates significantly less carbon. We want customers to choose Ecopath for performance. The planet should benefit automatically,” he explains further.
Busting market myths
Though market players acknowledge the concerns with cement and its impact on the environment, there is a widely held myth that sustainable materials would cost more or not perform as expected. Sourabh aims to address both of them through Ecopath’s cement.
“Our zero-cement concrete is not positioned merely as an eco-friendly alternative. Across key tested parameters in relevant applications, it can outperform conventional cement concrete through higher strength, lower water absorption, better resistance to acid and chemical attack, and improved long-term durability.
In a recent M40 road trial, our concrete achieved approximately 22 MPa strength within 24 hours, without cement and without water curing. Depending on the application, it can also reduce embodied carbon by up to 75 to 80 percent.
We are not selling sustainability at the cost of performance. We are selling a superior material that happens to be dramatically more sustainable,” he explains.
Strengthening credibility for Ecopath
Though market players understand the importance of conserving resources and reducing waste, they usually do not trust sustainable construction companies due to the lack of credibility. With instances of greenwashing, inconsistent quality or poorly executed projects having ruined reputations, Sourabh knows he has to create a credible reputation for the claims he makes through Ecopath.
“A sustainable product must pass a higher performance test than a conventional product, because it is expected to prove both engineering and environmental value,” he explains.
“Ecopath addresses this through material testing, soil testing, controlled production, documented execution and design-to-build responsibility. Our solutions are assessed for strength, water absorption, durability and chemical resistance, not merely carbon reduction.
We also operate through a distributed manufacturing network across Bengaluru, Mysuru and Pune, with paver capacity of approximately 1.5 lakh units per day. This allows us to scale production closer to the customer while reducing transportation cost and emissions,”
Current Status, Future Plans
Today, Ecopath has come a long way from a bootstrapped startup to a Rs.20 crore revenue firm. Its projects have helped reduce water consumption by 30%, while reusing more than 10,000 tonnes of industrial waste to create 2x stronger roads, precast solutions, or readymix eco concrete. For Sourabh, this is only the start.
“Our ambition is not to become another sustainable-materials company. It is to build the world’s most resource-efficient infrastructure platform, from India.
By 2030, we aim to enable the avoidance of 1 million tonnes of CO₂e through zero-cement concrete, circular construction materials, soil stabilisation and low-carbon road systems.
Our larger vision is to prove that the strongest and most durable infrastructure can also have the lowest carbon footprint. We want zero-cement roads, zero-water-curing concrete and industrial by-product-based construction materials to become standard engineering choices rather than niche innovations.
The ultimate legacy will be infrastructure that lasts longer, consumes fewer natural resources and does not force future generations to choose between development and the planet.
Ecopath will measure success through three numbers: carbon never emitted, water never consumed and infrastructure that never required premature rebuilding,”
